NCBPTE Continuing Competence Resources:
Professional Self-Assessment/Reflective Practice Exercise
The following information is designed to help clarify the rule regarding Reflective Practice Exercise and to provide guidelines to meet the requirement. The rule states:
21 NCAC 48G .0109 Continuing Competence Activities
(h) Professional Self-Assessment earns five points for completion of an approved Reflective Practice Exercise. This exercise shall be approved if it is a process for a licensee to evaluate current professional practice abilities, to establish goals to improve those abilities, to develop a plan to meet those goals and to document that the objectives are being accomplished. The licensee shall submit evidence of completion of all elements of the Reflective Practice Exercise. Points shall be awarded only one time during any reporting period.
The purpose of the exercise is to help clinicians assess their level of competence and to develop goals and a plan of action for improvement. It is not a one-time exercise, but is designed to help licensees develop a professional roadmap. Therefore, it should be maintained and updated on a regular basis during the reporting period. A copy of all materials should be kept as documentation of the continuing competence activity.
For a Self-Assessment/Reflective Practice Exercise to be approved for continuing competence points it must include the following:
- Evaluation of current professional practice abilities,
- Establishment of goals to improve those abilities,
- Development of a plan of action to meet those goals,
- Documentation of accomplishment of the goals.
You may submit a self-assessment or reflective practice exercise for approval prior to completing it or use the exercise NCBPTE has designed. The NCBPTE activity must be completed in its entirety to earn 5 points (see Rule above)
